17 Oct. – – Mars Bishop, Barrington High’s talented “long  ranger’’, made his debut at the Brown University Cross Country Invitational on Saturday doubly notable. After the season-opening Injury Fund Relay Carnival, the junior harrier came down with mononucleosis; it sidelined him for much of the 2015 campaign – until Saturday, that is.

Running in the Championship Division race at Goddard Park in perfect cross country conditions (cool and clear), a healthy Bishop crossed the finish line as the first Rhode Islander; in the No. 8 spot with a time of 15:22. (The boys’ top bracket champion was Josh Clark, of Highland Regional in 14:58.)

In the girls’ Championship 3.1-mile run, the Ocean State’s top placer was Narragansett High senior Marissa Mc Philips; 10th overall in 18:22. (Alyssa Aldridge, of Mainland, clocked 17:07 for the win.)

“I started off strong,’’ said Bishop, who last year finished just out of contention for a third-team coaches all-state spot at the State Meet (22nd place). “I was focused. I went out fast, did the first mile in 4:50. The top guys took it out. I was pretty much in the middle.’’

Mc Phillips, a successful track athlete for theMariners, was a second-team coaches all-state cross country selection last year off the State Championship. She placed 10th in 19:12 on the Ponaganset High course.

Also at Goddard Park on Saturday, Hendricken’s freshman corps took the team title with 51 points. Nick Braz clocked 13:45 over 4 kilometers to lead the Hawks. Cumberland’s Dan Collard was the top R.I. finisher in that race; fourth in 13:43.

Classical High’s Joe Murphy finished second in the boys’ Varsity I race, clocking in at 16:07. In the girls; Varsity I division, Westerly sophomore Randi Burr went 18:33 to finish seventh overall. Burr last year was a first-team RITCA all-stater on the strength of her seventh-place showing at the State Championships.

Course Notes: The Brown Invitational’s 13th annual “Service to Cross Country’’ Award was presented jointly to Woonsocket coaches George Briggs and Barbara (Raymond) Daluz. Briggs has piloted ‘Novan cross country and track for 35 years. His Class A Championship team of 1987 was led by all-stater Raymond. Raymond was also the state titlist that year . . . The Class and JV Championships will be held Oct. 31 at Ponaganset.
