“Around the Course’’ Storm Scratches Great American; Rego-Led Rams: Golden in Maine; Avs, Eagles, Chieftains in VT

     3 Oct. – – The hurricane passing off the mid-Atlantic seaboard canceled Saturday’s Great American Cross Country Festival in Cary, N.C. Teams from La Salle (girls’) and Hendricken had entered in the event.  The meet will not be rescheduled.

     “We were in Fredericksburg [Va.] Thursday night when we found out,’’ said Hawk head coach Jim Doyle. “The [Cary] parks department closed down the park. They had no choice.’’ Doyle and his team stayed the night in Fredericksburg, and drove back to Rhode Island the next morning.

     The girls’ team from La Salle, meanwhile, were about to board a plane for North Carolina on Friday morning when coach Kelly Martin received news of meet’s cancellation. Martin subsequently entered her squad in the “Maine Cross Country Festival of Champions’’, which was held on Saturday at Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast, Me. The boys’ and girls’ teams from Cumberland were also entered.

     The Rams iced the team title at Belfast, gathering 30 points. Senior Eliza Rego won the seeded race with a time of 18:05.  Senior teammate Karina Tavares came in behind Rego; her time was 18:29. The Clippers’ top finisher was Amy Laverty in 19:04. For the boys at Belfast, Cumberland placed second with 162 points. Ben Drezek was the Clippers’ top man, coming in third at 16:12. Classical’s Joe Murphy placed seventh in 16:24.

     At the Woods Trail Run in Thetford, Vt. (home of this year’s New England Championship), Barrington’s Kate Zitzmann was the top girl; 20th spot in 20:18. In the boys’ race, East Greenwich’s Jackson Cronin placed 10th in a time of 16:55.
