“Around the Oval’’ Jacobsen: #2 U.S. in Weight; Avs, Purple, Clippers, Chargers Team Champs at Division Meets

30 Jan.  – – Before taking the throwers’ circle at the Headley Division Championship at the PCTA facility on Saturday, Toll Gate senior Courtney Jacobsen expressed the hope that, before the close of the indoor season, she’d own a mark of 57 feet with the 9-kilogram (20-pound) weight. “I’d love to hit that,’’ Jacobsen said.

The University of Michigan-bound Jacobsen nearly got her wish, while handily winning the competition with a distance of 56 feet, 7.50 inches (17.25 meters); a mark she attained on her initial throw, and repeated later in the flight. (It was the best overall distance recorded on the day.) With her performance, Jacobsen went from No. 6 on the U.S. list to second in the nation,  and bettered her personal best by more than two feet.

In team scoring on Saturday, Cumberland downed La Salle, 86-77, to take the Bayha Division prize.  In the Dwyer bracket, it was Chariho, 75-70, over second-place Woonsocket.  Classical took the Headley meet, while East Greenwich dominated the Sullivan Division scoring.

For Jacobsen, steady improvement

A competitor since her freshman year at Toll Gate, Jacobsen went out for the indoor track team, and wound up throwing the weight. “I picked it up quickly,’’ she said. “I really liked it.

“Coming in as a freshman, I really didn’t know what I was doing. I was pleased with my improvement. I just had a natural ability for it.’’

But success with the indoor weight and hammer in the spring season didn’t fall into Jacobsen’s lap. “I’ve had to train and practice with a variety of [implement] weights,’’ she said. “I’ve had to fight my way through. I like the hammer (her P-R is 178-6/54.40) , because technique is everything. It’s more fun.’’

Jacobsen’s mechanics have improved as well. She began with a one-turn release, but additional spins and great footwork has helped her to put the ball farther into the sector. “’m happy with my progress,’’ Jacobsen said, “especially this past year. I’m really excited.’’

RAMS’ U.S.-RANKED RUNNERS AT “OCEAN BREEZE’’ MEET

La Salle’s top distance men ran a near-sub-9-minute two-mile on Saturday at the Ocean Breeze Invitational on New York City. The race was won on the banked oval by Ram senior Matt Bouthillette in 9:05.48 (= 8:25.1 @ 3000 meters). Senior Jack Salisbury came across second in 9:06.58 (= 8:26.0 @ 3000). Ram junior DJ Principe posted a time of 9:07.35 (= 8:26.5 @ 3000), good for fourth place.

Bouthliiette’s new two-mile time is currently No. 2 in the United States. Salisbury is now ranked third in the country, and Principe fifth nationally.
