11 Oct. 2010 – Declaring that he was “in the zone” throughout the race, North Providence senior Alex Gallo cruised to victory in the boys’ varsity race during today’s Columbus Day Invitational. The 66th annual edition of the event was staged along 2.85 hilly miles at Providence’s Roger Williams Park. Clear skies and temperatures in the upper 60s’ prevailed.
Gallo, an ‘09 All-Stater who finished third in the state, clocked 15 minutes, 3 seconds for the race, and by the final mile had built up a wide lead over his closest opponent: teammate Adam Coogan. Coogan placed second in 15:48.
“I tried to settle into my pace,” said Gallo. “I know this course; it’s gorgeous. And I’m a hill runner.”
St. Raphael’s Robert Parker was third in the boys’ Varsity Division (16:01).
Liz Hanke, a senior from Pilgrim, won the girls’ varsity run. She clocked 19:27. Burrillville harriers went 2-3. Anna and Danielle Dumas went 19:34 and 19:46, respectively.
The boys’ Freshman/Novice run had Coventry Matt Fusco as its winner. Fusco timed 17:10. Classical’s Alicia Holloway won the girls’ Freshman/Novice in 20:35. In a 2.85-miler in which both genders ran together, Lauren Deguire, of Mt. St. Charles, won the girls’ portion in 21:15; Coventry’s Steve Goulet was the boys’ champ (18:27.
