11 Sept. - - The season-opening Relay Carnival races were staged yesterday on the Burrillville Middle School grounds, after a day’s postponement due to rain. All varsity races were 5 kilometers in distance, while the freshman runs were 4100 meters. La Salle girls are perfect
In the Sullivan Race, the Rams aced a perfect 15, and took the first 12 spots. The defending state champs were led by defending individual titlist Molly Keating, Keating, a senior, clocked 20 minutes, 17 seconds. Finishing second was teammate Caitlin Marino (20:25). South Kingstown senior Paige Ethier logged the best time of the day in winning the Caswell run. Her time over the 5K route was 19:03. The next finisher came in a minute later.
Aisha Mc Adams, North Kingstown’s junior distance ace, kicked off her ‘11 cross country season by taking the Hindley Race in 19:56. The Skippers’ Alison Lomas was next in 21:03. In the Roy Race, it was Barrington’s Fiona Paine first across the line. Pane, a second-team All-Stater last season, clocked 19:53, ahead of teammate Alice Burgess’ 20:15.
In the girls’ freshman 4100-meter race, Smithfield’s Becky Meinertz won with a time of 16:50.
Hendricken, last year’s state team champs, accumulated 20 team points, and werepaced by senior Mark Vuono and his time of 16 minutes, 17 seconds. The Avengers’ Ben Fazio came in second (16:25). Mike Marsella, Chariho senior, triumphed in the Platt Race. Marsella, a first-team All-Stater last season (fifth in the state), clocked 15:25, the best time of the day yesterday. Teammate and fellow All-Stater Jake Kilcoyne was second in 16:21. It was Cumberland’s Matt Sutcliffe over the line first in the Lowery run. Sutcliffe was timed in 16:27, to 16:30 posted by La Salle’s Adam Rego. The Lawton Race was captured by North Kingstown’s Austin Gaudreau in a time of 17 minutes. The Skippers took five of the first seven spots in the Lawton, scoring 17 points to 42 for South Kingstown. Dallin Smith, of NK, placed second in 17:06. Promising Hendricken freshman Mike Potter won the boys’ 4100 meters in 13:26.
