Hawks, Rams Shine in Eastern States Race at Manhattan Invitational; Keating Paces La Salle in Manhattan Girls’ Race

Falcon girls also do well in NYC


9 Oct. 2010 – Hendricken’s Ryan Meehan was Rhode Island’s top finishers in the Eastern States Championship race, the highlight event of the Manhattan Invitational event, each race held over 2.5 miles at Van Cortlandt Park, New York. Meehan’s time was 12 minutes, 54 seconds. Also in that run, La Salle’s Zach Fraielli placed sixth behind Meehan in 12:56.

Behind Meehan, Andrew Andraka (13:19), Drew Manning (13:56), Tyler Henesler (14:01) and Mark Vuono (14:03) were top five scorers. The Hawks finished 10th in team scoring. The Rams’ Ryan Walsh (13:20), Adam Rego (14:09), Sean Phayer (14:11) and Andy Estrada (14:22) comprised the top five. La Salle finished 12th in Eastern States team scoring.

Meanwhile, junior Molly Keating led her La Salle teammates to a second-place finish in the Varsity “B” division race at the Manhattan Invitational. The series of races were held over 2.5 miles at Van Cortlandt Park in New York City. Keating was timed in 15 minutes 17 seconds.

In the “C” Division run, the Cranston West girls’ squad finished fifth as a team, and were paced by Alex Hackertt’s tenth-place finish. Alex clocked 16:20, 14 seconds ahead of her sister, Michaela, who placed 13th overall in 16:34.

Evie Jansen was the next Ram finisher, coming across the line in 13th place (16:07). Emily Papazian (18th, 16:23), Caitlin Marino (33rd, 16:39) and Victoria Stephens (42nd, 16:57) comprised La Salle’s top five.

East Greenwich’s Jamie Dorsey was the state’s top finisher in the girls’ “D” race (24th, 16:46).

In boys’ races, Toll Gate’s Joe Frost was the top local finisher in the “D” Division 2.5-miler. Frost clocked 15:08. The Titans came in 23rd in team scoring. Brandon Golda (15:28), Josh Frank (15:34), Ben Dinoble (15:49) and Matt Den off (17:34) rounded out the Avenger top five.

Tolman’s Euris Ferreira was Rhode Island’s No. 1 finisher (127th overall) in the boys’ “F” race. He was timed in 16:07. In the “G” division, Chariho’s boys came in second as a team, and were led by junior John Marsella’s sixth-place showing (13:36). Dan Kilcoyne (13:48), Ian LaPlume (14:06), Garrett Montague (14:46) and Mike Gilligan (15:02) were the Chargers’ top five.

Around the Course notes: Next weekend, the Brown High School Invitational will be held at Goddard Park. The date is Saturday, 16 October . . . Former East Greenwich All-Stater MarkFeigen won the Metropolitan Collegiate Cross Country Championship race Saturday at Van Cortlandt. Feigen, of Columbia University, clocked 25:46. Seekonk’s Johnny Gregorek was fourth in 26:01.
