30 Oct. 2010 – Both defending state team titlists captured the Class A boys’ and girls’ titles at the Class Championships in windy weather at Ponaganset High’s woodsy, hilly course. The Hawks took the boys’ prize, 53-61, over La Salle. In the girls’ Class A event, it was the Rams ahead of North Kingstown, 25-55.
In other races today, Barrington won the Class B title, 23-59, in front of South Kingstown, while East Greenwich topped second-place Burrillville for the Class C crown. South Kingstown nipped second-place Portsmouth (51-55) for the boys’ Class B championship, while Smithfield took Class C honors.
Individually for the girls, La Salle junior Molly Keating handily outran the competition in the Class A event, and posted the best girls’ time of the day: 18:33.7. Keating, the defending state champ, finished nearly 40 seconds in front of second-place Aisha McAdams, the talented Skipper sophomore (18:59). “The first mile, I ran with my team,” Keating said. “Then I took it out as fast as I could. My training [last week] went well.”
La Salle went 3-4, with freshman Caroline Falvished ey (19:28), and junior Emily Papazian (19:31) hitting those respective positions. The sisters Michaela andAlexandria Hackett crossed the line 5-6, respectively.
It was Barrington senior Molly Malinowski winning the girls’ Class B race, clocing 19:24 in the process. “I ran exactly the race and time I wanted,” said Malinowski, an ‘09 All-Stater (fourth place: 19:17). “I went 5:55 at the mile, and I was where I wanted to be.” Finishing behind Malinowski was teammate Abigail Livingston, a freshman, in 19:26.
Westerly’s smooth-running No. 1 - freshman Jackie Burr - challenged Malinowski early on, and finished third in 19:44.
In the Class C division, Jaimee Dorsey, an East Greenwich junior who’s had a fine season, hit the tape in a winning 20:26, followed by Exeter/West Greenwich senior Amy Cunningham (20:35).
The most exciting boys’ race was the Class A event, where Cranston West senior Bob Allen battled Hendricken’s Ryan Meehan and La Salle’s Zach Fraielli. In the end it was the Falcon long ranger winning in 15:48. Meehan placed second in 15:50, and Fraielli third in 16:12. “I just relaxed the first two miles,” said Allen, a second-place finisher at last year’s State Meet. Allen kicked in and took charge in the final 500 meters.
Alex Gallo, impressive all season for North Providence, cruised to victory in the Class B boys’ race. Gallo led, wire-to-wire and crossed the line in 16:39, 30 seconds ahead of Portmouth’s John Corbett (17:09). The Cougars’ Adam Coogan placed third (17:10).
Senior Liam Hillery, who helped his Sentinels to the Northern Division crown this fall, was the winner in Class C. Hillary finished 10 seconds ahead of Mount St. Charles’s Pat Butler, 16:27, 16:37 respectively.
Around the course notes: Boding well for its future, the La Salle girls’ junior varsity runners scored a perfect 15 in that race, placing five of the top seven runners, and led by Tiana Kibbe’s 20:02 time . . . Hendricken’s 44 points was good for a team win the boys’ JV run . . . The Hawks were paced by freshman Colin Tierney, who clocked 17:15 . . . The 2010 State Championships return to Ponaganset next Sunday, with races at 1:15 and 2:15 . . .The final coaches poll is due this week . . . At the Big East Championships in Syracuse, N.Y., former Westerly High star and Georgetown freshman Andrew Springer placed seventh in 26:35.2 . . . Harvard junior Jeanne Mack finished sixth at the Heptagonal Championships at Van Cortlandt Park, N.Y. Mack, the former La Salle All-Stater, ran the 5000-meter course in 17:29.6, good for a spot on the All-Ivy team.
