Hawks Top Boys’ Poll; Rams, Eagles, Rebels Close in Girls’ Survey

10 Sept. – The results of this week’s Injury Fund cross country events, held in Burrillville, were ample proof of a highly competitive season ahead. In the girls’ races, Barrington’s Abigail Jones posted the days’ fastest time (18:51), while Cranston Wests’s Bob Allen had the best time in the boys’ races (15:57).

And the RIT&FF pre-season poll also yields some interesting results. The poll (which this year includes voters from the media as well as coaches) shows a logjam at the top of the girls‘ survey. La Salle, the defending state team champs, collected 124 points, with state runner-up Barrington a point behind. South Kingstown, which placed fifth among teams at last year’s State Meet, gathered 100 points.

In the boys’ pre-season survey, defending state-champion Hendricken had 156 points, to second-place La Salle’s 137. North Kingstown polled 100 points to come in third in the voting. The Rams finished third in the state last year, with the Skippers finishing fifth among teams.

Around the Course: The RIIL dual meet season gets under way on Monday . . . The CVS Downtown races are set for 19 Sept. in Providence . . . The annual Call Invitational meet will go off next Friday (17 Sept.) . . . The next coaches/media poll is slated for 30 Sept., a week following the Ocean State Cross Country Invitational.
