Jacob Breaks His LJ Mark, (Twice) At RITCA Invitational

18 Dec. 2010 – After eliminating a 22 year-old state record for the boys’ indoor long jump last week, Chariho’s Innocent Jacob was determined to better than mark. The Charger senior did that, and more, on Saturday at the annual R.I. Track Coaches Invitational meet at the Providence Athletic Facility.

Last Wednesday, Jacob went 7.02 meters (23 feet, ½ inch) to break Dennis Soares’s 1988 record of 22-11 (6.98). At Saturday’s meet, Jacob made good on his vow to go beyond his own achievement. In his first jump of the day, Jacob leapt to a distance of 23-1 (7.03), hitting the toe-board dead-center. Back for his final round of jumps, the Chariho standout fouled his first two; he was beyond the board on each. But on his final attempt of the day, Jacob went 7.08 meters (23-3).

“I was taking it one jump at a time,’’ said Jacob, who also competed in the high jump and the 55 dash. “I felt like my second jump [in the final round] was my best. I felt better in the air. I had more speed. I’m working on my landings,’’ said Jacob, adding that 7.31 meters (24 feet) is his goal for the season.

Not resting on his long jump laurels, Jacob reported to the high jump area, where he battled Rogers junior Devon Baily. Jacob finished second with a jump of 1.93 (6 feet, 4 inches), after upending the bar at 1.98 (6-6). Baily cleared 1.98, but went out when the bar was raised another two inches. Jacob also ran the 55-meter dash, finishing second (6.5) to Shea’s Fred Gobewole, who clocked 6.3.

* In the girls’ portion of the meet, Central Falls senior Aleide Fernandes was a double winner. She took the 20-pound weight throw with a distance of 16.26 meters (53-4.50), and the shot with a put of 11.48 (37-8). Hope’s Royal Cheatham went 5.32 (17-5.50) to win the long jump, and won the dash in 7.1. Aisha McAdams, the North Kingstown sophomore clocked 10:32.3 to win the 3000 in an early-race battle with Cranston West’s Michaela Hackett (second in 10:47.4), and La Salle’s Caroline Falvey (third, 10:47.8). Classical’s Maddie Berkson turned in a 4:50.3 to win the 1,500 meters, while Bay View sophomore Erica Johnson clocked a meet-record 1:37.0 to win the 600.

* Cranston West senior Bob Allen ran a smooth 2:38.5 to win the 1,000 meters, and finished second in the 600 (1:23.5). Joe Velez, a Classical junior, threw a winning 21.66 (71 feet, 1 inch) to win the 25-pound weight event. He placed second to Rogers’s Nikita Hazel in the shot; Hazel putting a 14.03-meter distance (46-0.50), over Velez’ 13.97 (45-10) effort. Smithfield junior Liam Hillery went 8:47.9 to win the 3,000, while La Salle’s Tim O’Neill captured the 1,500 in 4:17.8.

Oval Notes: The first of three RIT&FF coach/media polls is due Dec. 21, after the first week of dual-meet competition, and the RITCA meet . . . The annual Ocea State Invitational is scheduled for 29 Dec. at the Providence track.
