30 Jan. 2011 – A pair of “last chance’’ meets were staged as the PCTA track over the weekend; meets designed as additional qualifiers heading into the Division/Class Championships. In an excitingly tactical race - the girls’ 3000 meters - La Salle freshman Caroline Falvey beat back strong challenges from Classical’s Maddie Berkson and Barrington’s Abigail Jones. Falvey crossed the line in 10 minutes, 36.2 seconds. Jones, back from an injury, led midway through the race, was overtaken by Berkson, but finished second in 10:38.0. Berkson placed third in 10:38.9.
Hope junior Royal Cheatham had a banner day, winning the dash in a meet-record 7.0, and leaping 5.45 meters (17 feet, 10.75 inches) to take the long jump. Cheatham also ran opening leg on the Blue Wave’s winning 4x200 relay; she combined with akisha DaCruz, Ebony Marrow and Shyniece Sanders to clock a meet-record 1:46.5. La Salle’s talented Meehan sisters - Madison and Mackenzie - went 1-2 respectively in the 1500. Madison hit the tape in a meet-record 4:54.0, and MacKenzie finished in 4:55.0.
Freshman Berkson, Classical’s “can-do’’ kid showed her versatility beyond the 3000 meters. The freshman won the 1000 in 3:03.2, and placed behind Cheatham in the long jump (5.30m/17-4.75).Robyn McFetters, Barrington’s ace thrower, won the 20-pound weight event with a toss of 15.03 meters (49-3.75).
Classical junior Joe Velez, the boys’ leader in the 25-pound weight throw, won the boys’ meet title with a distance of 20.20 meters (66-3.50). Chariho’s Innocent Jacob was a double-winner. Jacob, a senior, went 6.94 meters (22-9.25) to win the long jump, and took the high jump event with a height of 1.98 (6-6). Bob Allen, the Cranston West senior, clocked 1:24.8 to win the 600, and Westerly senior John DiGangi clocked 2:33.6 in winning the 1000 meters. La Salle’s Zach Fraielli went 4:02.3 to take the 1500, and Chariho junior Mike Marsella was the boys’ 3000-meter champ (9:07.0).
Oval Notes: Both meets were non-scoring, and included teams from eastern Connecticut schools . . . Two PCTA Fieldhouse plaques - listing the names of R.I. Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame members - were formally dedicated between the girls’ and boys’ “last chance’’ meets on Saturday.
