9 Jan. 2011 – It was a nice homecoming to the track for Barrington senior Abigail Jones. After an injury last fall, Jones had been sidelines from competition. But yesterday at the 45th annual Dartmough Relays in Hanover, N.H., the Eagle ace returned to the oval in the girls’ mile run. Against a field of runners from the Northeast and Canada, Jones aquitted herself well, clocking in at 5 minutes, 20.49 seconds for ninth place.
In the Dartmouth two-mile, Jones’s teammate - senior Molly Malinowski - finished second in 11:31.48. Portsmouth’s Leah Hibbad hit the tape in 1:00.64 to place third in the 600 at Hanover, while the Rams’ Caitlin Marino came in third in the 800 (2:24.51). Robyn McFetters, of Barrington, placed second in the 20-pound weight event with a toss of 14.36 meters (47 fee, 1.50 inches).
The boys had three gold medalists at Dartmouth. Chariho’s talented Dan Kilcoyne won the 1000 meters in 2:35.08, while La Salle’s Jalen Young captured the 300 in 35.47. The Hendricken 4x400 relay took the gold medal with a time of 3:25.66. Alex Perreault, Ryan Brannigan, John Ferris and Andy Sakovits did the honors for the Hawks.
Ram senior Zach Fraielli nearly won the mile run, but was nipped by 10 1/100ths of a second by Nick Deshaies, of Quebec, Canada. Fraielli clocked 4:21.55 to Deshaies’s 4:21.45. Portsmouth’s Tyler Oliveira placed second in the 400 meters (50.80), while Hendricken’s Reuben Horace finished similarly in the 25-pound weight throw (19.10 meters/62-8). Westerly senior John Di Gangi got a crack at his favorite event: the 800 meters. He placed third at Dartmouth in 1:58.08.
In team scoring at the two-day Dartmouth meet, Hendricken finished second for the boys, with La Salle coming in fourth. Barrington placed 12th among girls’ teams.
Down in South County Meanwhile, a daylong meet yesterday was taking place in Kingston, R.I. at the annual Rhody Invitational at the Mackal Fieldhouse track. Rhode Island had a number of firsts at the daylong meet. For the girls, Charihio’s Amy Roy (high jump), Hope’s Royal Cheatham (55 meters and long jump), Aisha McAdams (1600), Classical’s Maddie Berkson (1000), Bay View’s Erica Johnson (600) and East Greenwich’s Jaimee Dorsey (300) all mined gold. Cheatham’s two wins came via a 7.28 in the dash, and a distance of 5.11 meters (16-9.50) in the long jump.
Classical’s Joe Velez (weight) and Gustavo Reynosa (shot); Barrington’s Dylan Verner-Crist (3200), North Providence’s Alex Gallo (1600); and the Hope 4x200 relay were all gold medalists at Rhody.
In the boys’ long jump, meanwhile, Chariho senior and state record-holder Innocent Jacob won the event, but short of his previous jumps. Nonetheless, the Charger senior (who is profiled on the front page of today’s Providence Sunday Journal) got off a leap of 6.87 meters (22-6.50).
Oval Notes: Cranston West senior Bob Allen will compete this week at the trials for the Millrose High School mile run. The event will be held at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York City. The top two finishers (regardless of time) qualify for the Millrose mile, to be held next month at Madison Square Garden . . . The next coaches/media indoor track poll is slated for 28 January.
