23 Jan. 2011 – Smithfield distance man Liam Hillery struck gold in the boys’ 3,000-meter run at the annual Yale High School Classic in New Haven. The Sentinel junior clocked 8 minutes, 40.57 seconds on the Coxe Cage oval, bettering by seven seconds his best dual-meet performance. Hillery’s time is currently third in the United States.
Also victorious at Yale was La Salle senior Jalen Young led the boys’ 400-meter field with his time of 49.70.
And Joe Velez, of Classical, heaved the 25-pound weight a winning distance of 19.74 meters (64 feet, 9.25 inches). Velez already owns a throw of 21.66 (71-1).
In other standout performances at Yale:
Portsmouth’s Tyler Oliveira placed second behind Young in the 400 (49.85), and Chariho distance man Dan Kilcoyne finished second in the boys’ 800 (1:57.99). Kilcoyne was followed closely in that race by Westerly senior John DiGangi (third in 1L58.26). La Salle senior long ranger Zach Fraielli clocked 4:23.92 to place fifth in the boys’ mile. Hendricken’s 4x400 relay finished second in the championship division (3:25.31).
For the girls, Hope’s Royal Cheatham clocked 7.31 seconds to place third in the 55-meter dash finals. Cheatham also competed in the long jump, placing ninth. The Blue Wave’s 4x200 relay finished in second place (1:46.08), as did a La Salle foursome in the 4x800 (9:37.14).
