4 April – – The last – indeed, the only – time that a Cumberland High boys’ 4-mile relay won a Knights of Columbus Division I race was back in 1979.  The then-Clipper foursome went 18:56.1 for the win. On Saturday, 36 years later, Cumberland took the Division I title back to Diamond Hill Road. The Clipper “long rangers’’ – Sean Laverty, Abdullah Kaba, Jim Haupt and Dave Agudelo – clocked 18 minutes, 54.1 seconds over a team from Hendricken (19:07.3.)

Saturday’s meet was also debut competition for the hammer throwers, and results from both genders were a continuation of the indoor weight throw battles that went on this past winter. Indeed, performances across the board were notable this early in the season. The Barrington High “dynamic duo’’ of Adam Kelly and Bobby Colantonio emerged 1-2 in the competition. Kelly won the event with a toss of 236 feet, 7 inches (72.11 meters). Colantonio went 235-11 (71.90) for second place. Owen Russell, of Moses Brown School – last year’s K. of C. champ – finished third on Saturday with a mark of 222-3 (67.74).

In the girls’ 9-kilogram hammer, it was Classical High senior Alva Hicks with a winning throw of 164-11 (50.26). Hicks was last year’s runner-up. Courtney Jacobsen, of Toll Gate, placed second at 156-4 (47.65), with Smithfield’s Meagan Malloy coming in third (152-10/46.58).

The Sentinels took the girls’ Division II 4×1-mile relay with Sydney Bagus, Becky Meinertz, Analise England and Genesee Daley clocking in at 23:44.0. The Division II boys’ relay was won by Barrington. Mars Bishop, Kierna McGartoll, Eli Melnick and Sam Somera posted a time of 20:15.5. East Greenwich captured the Division III race. Noah Berreto, Alex Gannon, Tommy Sommer and Matt Wegryzn went 19:42.3 for the win.

The girls’ freshman mile champ was won by Una Treanor, of Smithfield, in 5:45.7.

OVAL SIDEBAR: Barrington High’s Emma Mc Millan ready for spring

A stress fracture last year kept her on the sidelines of spring track. But this season, Barrington junior Emma Mc Millan is healthy and anticipatory of good results in her first full campaign. “I’m looking forward to it,’’ said Mc Millan, the three-time state cross country champ. “I haven’t run in awhile. It’s been a while since I’ve been on the track.’’

Mc Millan, who swims competitively during the winter, on Saturday ran a leg on one of her school’s relays. Besides her winter swimming regimen, Mc Millan has been in training for the outdoor campaign. “I’m not looking so much for [personal] time,’’ she said. “I want to help our team win the division and class championship.’’
