15 June – – Barrington senior Adam Kelly won the international (6-kilo) hammer competition last weekend at the National Scholastic Athletics Sports Foundation (NSAF) annual Caribbean International Invitational. The event was held at the National Stadium in Havana, Cuba.

Kelly threw the 13-pound ball 221 feet, 9 inches (67.58 meters), a new meet record. Earlier in the weekend, Kelly competed with the 6-kilo shot put, and finished fourth with a put of 47-7.75 (14.52).

“It was great to see a different culture, said Kelly, a three-time All-American who enters Princeton University in the fall. “The international experience was great. Culturally there’s a lot more understanding. [Cubans] are people, just like us. The Cuban and American flags were flying together. The [shot mark] was one of my best performances.’’

The United States team, of which Kelly was a member, consisted of 14 young men and women selected by NSAF, and the first team to travel to, and compete in Cuba since 1997. The trip lasted five days.

Kelly heads to North Carolina for the weekend’s New Balance National Championships as the defending U.S. hammer champ.
