13 June – – It was a banner day on Saturday for Hope High senior Quashira “Q” Mc Intosh and her Blue Wave teammates at the 70th annual New England Track & Field Championships, held at Thornton Academy in Saco, Maine. The Fabulous “Q’’ closed out her R.I. Interscholastic League track career (with the New Balance Nationals on the horizon) not only by defending her New England 200-meter title with a state-record performance, but by breaking her week-old state mark in the 100. Mc Intosh also anchored the Blue Wave’s 4×400 relay that eliminated a 12 year-old R.I. standard. She joined Chevell Burgess, Whitney Jackson and Isis Hack for a combined winning time of 3:53.41. That bettered the 2003 mark of 3:53.73 set by a Westerly relay. Hope’s Jackson, a senior, won the New England triple jump gold medal with a leap of 37-8.25 (11.48 meters).

Classical High senior Alva Hicks won the shot and discus events. Hicks put the shot 42-5.25 (12.93) and threw the discus 135-7 (41.32).

In the 100 meters, Mc Intosh clocked 11.63 in finishing second to Maine’s Kate Hall (11.41), the New England record-holder in that event. “Q’s” time bettered her 11.82 clocking at last weekend’s State Championship. Indeed, Saturday’s 100-meter performance marked the third time Mc Intosh has bettered her own state record.

In the New England 200 meters on Saturday, “Q” downed Hall (23.69) to post a winning – and state record – time of 23.64. Again, it was “Q” topping herself; she had already owned a 24.21 200-meter record performance from two years ago.

Rhode Island’s other All-New England female performers on Saturday: La Salle’s Eliza Rego, Karina Tavares and Sheridan Wilbur in the 1600; the Hope and Cranston West 4×100 relay teams; Hope’s Chevell Burgess in the 300 hurdles; Narragansett’s Marissa Mc Phillips in the 800; the Mariners’ Carly Timpson in the high jump.

In the boys’ 1600 meters, La Salle’s DJ Principe went 4:17.67 (= 3:59.8 @ 1500m) to place second. Mt. Pleasant’s Trevane Clarke went 21.79 to finish third in the boys’ 200.

Local boys making All-New England honors: Central’s Dontein Djero in the 100; La Salle’s Principe, Matt Bouthillette and East Greenwich’s Tommy Sommer in the 1600; Central’s Austin Wolo and the Townies’ Al Duarte in the 400; Classical’s Newell Roberts in the pole vault; Lincoln’s Joe Taylor in the javelin.
