21 Feb. – – With plenty of firepower in the distance runs, the La Salle girls’ track team posted their ninth consecutive team title at the 2015 State Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at the PCTA facility in Providence. The Rams’ streak stretches back to 2007, when they snapped a five-year run by Westerly High. On Saturday, La Salle bested second-place Hope, 103-58.

And it was a repeat outcome for the La Salle boys’ squad as they captured their second straight team prize. Similarly distance-fueled, the boys topped second-place Barrington High, 104-58. For the Eagels, this was the first time in 50 years that had finished as state runners-up. It was La Salle over Barrington, 27-23, in that 1965 state meet.

Last February, the /Rams overcame Classical’s 30 individual points posted by then-senior Maddy Berkson. La Salle’s points in the high jump iced its win. The Ram boys outpointed the Purple, 81-69.

While no R.I. state records were bettered on Saturday, the meet nonetheless yielded some fine performances in front of a capacity audience.

GIRLS: Hicks dominates throws; ‘Q’ turns on the jets; Rego takes two

As she has all season, Classical senior Alva Hicks made the weight throw and shot put her dcomain. On Saturday, the No. 4-rankes senior threw the 9-kilogram ball 57 feet, 6.50 inches (17.53 meters) for a facility record. Over at the shot put circle, Hicks copped gold with a mark of 41-0.50 (12.50.

Speaking of repeat peeformances, Hope High senior Quashira “Q” Mc Intosh again claimed the 55 and 300-meter dashes for her own, as well as anchoring two winning Blue Wave relays. “Q” tied a meet mark in the dash with a 7.11 time. (First clocked by Hope teammate Royal Cheathan.)  Mc Intosh returned to the track and posted a winning time of 41.16 in the 300.

“Q” expressed some disappointment in her 300 time. “I didn’t get out fast enough,’’ she said, adding that she also hopes to improve on her 55 dash time at next Friday’s New England meet..

The Hope 4×200 relay was gold, thanks to a combined time of 1:43.60. Mc Intosh anchored Isis Hack, Whitney Jackson and Chevell Burgess. In the 4×400 it was the same Blue Wave quartet clocking in at 4:03.39 for the win.

Eliza Rego, the La Salle junior who recently minted a new state record in the 1500 meters, won that race on Saturday with a time of 4:42.05. “My goal was to win,’’ said Rego, whose R.I. record in 4:34.30. “We went in thinking [split times]. I was happy with my times. Rego also aced the 1000 meters with a time of 2:54.76, a meet record. In both races, Rego overcame a challenge from teammate Karina Tavares, who placed second in each event.

Classical junior May Stern ran a strong 1:38.22 to win the 600. Narragansett senior Carly Timpson cleared 5-4 (1.63) in the high jump, while Cumberland junior Meaghan Scullin popped a long jump mark of 17-9.25 (5.41) for the gold.

BOYS: Kelly is Eagles’ rock; Salisbury leads Ram-chargers

Barrington High hadn’t finished second at a state indoor meet since 1965, and on Saturday, senior strongman Adam Kelly provided 20 points to the cause with wins in the weight throw and shot. Kelly, the No. 1 weight man in the U.S. – with R.I. and New England records to show for it – won on Saturday with a distance of 81 feet, 3 inches (24.76 meters). Kelly already holds the regional record at 83-3.25 (25.38). He also put the shot a winning 54-5.25 (16.59).

“Obviously I’m happy with the win,’’ said the Princeton-bound Kelly. As for his status as the nation’s No. 1 prep thrower, Kelly said, “I try not to think about it, but it follows me around.’’

The 1500 and 1000-meter runs were veritable showcases – the second year in a row – for La Salle’s Jack Salisbury. The junior clocked 2:39.27 in the 1000 meters, beating Barrington’s Mars Bishop by 34 1/100th of a second. (Salisbury’s 2:39.27 to Bishop’s 2:39.61). La Salle went 1-2-3 in the 1500, with Salisbury leading the way on a 4:05.35 performance. Teammates Matt Bouthillette and Dan Paiva finished second and third, repectively.

“We help each other out a lot in training,’’ said Salisbury. “We just kind of get out there and run. It’s a confidence-booster.’’

Barrington’s Bishop went 1:24.13 to take the 600 meters. Doubling up was Central High’s sophomore Donatien Djero in the 300 and 55 meters. Ram sophomore DJ Principe led teammates Bouthillette and Jake Grundy to win the 3000 in 8:50.83. Hendricken senior Ben Murphy cleared 6-4 (1.93) in the high jump, while Trystan Casey, a senior from East Providence High, mined gold in the long jump (21-4.50/6.51).

Oval Notes: In a non-scoring exhibition pole vault on Saturday, Classical senior Newell Roberts cleared a winning height of 12 feet (3.65) . . . The New England Championships will be held next Friday (27 Feb.) at the Reggie Lewis track in Roxbury, Mass.
