28 April - - Erica Johnson and Jaimee Dorsey share similar events: both are successful middle distance practitioners. Dorsey, the East Greenwich senior, made headlines over the indoor season after breaking the R.I. state record for 300 meters, clocking 39.62 seconds to place third at the New England Championships on the Reggie Lewis track.

Bay View’s Johnson also notched an indoor record last winter. The Bengal junior went 56.34 at last March’s New Balance Championships in New York.
On Saturday, both runners took the track at the annual Cumberland Girls’ Invitational, held at Tucker Field. The meet is the first major qualifier of the spring. Both have sights set on bettering the state outdoor standard in the 400 (56.20, set in 1999 by Hope High’s Leah Grant).

“She’s really exploded this year, in terms of her training,’’ said Erin Newman, the East Greenwich coach, in discussing Dorsey. “She’s taken it to a new level, and isn’t afraid to push to the limit.’’

“It’s a challenge,’’ said Dorsey of running the quarter. “I like to see how fast I can run. I prefer a lot of competition.’’

Bay View’s Johnson, a Cranston resident, excelled in the 600 indoors last season, in addition to her achievement in the quarter. “But I really like the 800,’’ Johnson said. “I’m trying to build up strength. My strategy for the 400 is to go out fast.’’
Johnson clocked 2:18.6 to win today’s 800 meters.

“The Four Horsemen rule’’
At the Penn Relays in Philadelphia today, the Chariho foursome who last winter set a new United States record in the 4-mile relay, broke their own Rhode Island record in the 4x800 relay. The team of Dan Kilcoyne, Bryce Kelley, Jake Kilcoyne and anchor leg Mike Marsella finished fourth in the championship race in 7:46.26. The previous mark was 7:48.77, also held by the Chargers, run at the 2011 New Englands in Burlington, Vermont.

Dan Kilcoyne was leadoff leg at Franklin Field today, and clocked 1:59.14. Kelley came in at 1:53.10, handing off to No. 3 Jake Kilcoyne (2:00.60). Marsella went 1:53.44 for his anchor split.

“I was proud of the way they ran,’’ said Bill Habarek, the Chariho coach. “Drew [Turner] did a fine job [Friday].’’ Turner ran third leg on Friday afternoon as the Chargers won their preliminary heat in 7:52.69. “I’m excited about their progress.’’

OVAL MEET HIGHLIGHTS: At today’s Cumberland meet, the defending state-champion Rams amassed 110 team points, to 57 for second-place Classical. La Salle also won last year’s Cumberland. Senior Dakota Dailey-Harris cleared 5-7 (1.70 meters) to win the high jump, while La Salle’s 4x400 relay (anchored by Molly Keating), went 4:10.1 for the win. Sophomore Carolina Falvey gave the Rams 10 points with her win in the 3000, while teammate Catherine Maloney did likewise in the hammer.

Maddy Berkson, Classical’s do-all kid, won a pair of events. She unloaded the javelin 109 feet (33.22) over the 106-footer (33.20) thrown by Smithfield’s Mary Shields. In the 400 meters, Berkson outkicked Prout’s Karly Gregory, hitting the tape in 58.1 (to Gregory’s 59.9). Woonsocket junior Kaylnn Pitts leapt 37 feet, 5 inches (11.40) to win the triple jump, while the Crusaders’ Gregory won the long jump (16-9/5.10).
In the 4x800, it was Westerly, coming from behind to win in 10:11.3. Adeline Hanssenhj, Madison McLaughlin, Megan Sylvia and Carlie Sisco did the honors for the Bulldogs. Toll Gate senior Jordan Gray clocked 27 seconds to take the 200.
OVAL NOTES: The Rick Schomp Invitational will be held a week from today at the Exeter/W. Greenwich track . . . Divisional meets get under way on the week of 7 May.
