29 Jan. - - The Chariho High boys’ 4x800-meter relay Saturday obliterated the Rhode Island indoor record at the Charles Sweeney “Last Chance’’ meet at the PCTA oval. Charger senior Mike Marsella anchored his team’s relay, which clocked a winning time of 7 minutes, 54.3 seconds (hand-held). The performance knocked off the prevous R.I. standard of 8:04.05, held by South Kingstown since 2009. The time is also currently ranked second nationally.

Chariho’s foursome had their sights set on breaking the 4x800 record, and took no prisners once they took the track. Senior Drew Turner got things going with a 2:02.4 leadoff split. Then it was No. 2 runner - senior Dan Kilcoyne - who ran a smooth 1:58.7 before handing off to junior Bryce Kelley, whose leg was clocked in 1:58.6.
That set the stage for Mike Marsella, who in two weeks will enterd the prestigious Millrose Mile field in New York seeded second. On Saturday, Marsella took the baton and lapped the field. He turned a 1:54.6 split.

“I haven’t run an 800 since outdoor,’’ Marsella said. “I didn’t want to die at the last lap.’’ Not that Marsella did, and not that the state mark wasn’t already in the bag, as the Chariho quartet were six seconds past the SR time going into the anchor leg.
Berkson on the boards

At a USAT&F open track meet at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night, Classical’s Maddy Berkson placed sixth in a 10-girls open mile event; her time was 5 minutes, 2.77 seconds (= 4:40.1 @ 1500 meters).

The race was staged on the Garden track, a four-lane banked oval, 11 laps to the mile. The field went off on a “California start’’, and the Classical sophomore handled it all well.

“The banks were extremely deep,’’ Berkson said. “I’ve run at Reggie Lewis [banked track], before’’ she said. “And they let us warm up about an hour before the race. I felt good. I went out fast at first because I didn’t want to get caught [in a jam-up]. It was an honor to be here.’’

The Garden mile was won by Samantha Nadel, of North Shore, N.Y. in 4:47.66.
Notables, notables

Westerly senior Kevin Conway put the shot 51 feet, 3.50 inches (15.63) to win that event, and finished second in the 25-pound weight throw (67-9.75/20.66). It was a barn-burner over at the long jump pit, as Cumberland’s Ryan Rei out-leapt Coventry’s Larry Warwick by one inch. Rei, a senior finished off with a distance of 21-8 (6.60), to Warwick’s 21-7 (6.57).

In the Headley girls’ meet, La Salle’s Meehan twins - McKenzie and Madison - went 1-2 in the 1000 meters; McKenzie in 2:59.1, and Madison in 2:5.3. Their Ram teammate - senior Molly Keating - entered in the 600, and won it in 1:39.0. East Greenwich senior Jaimee Dorsey won two events: the 300 and the 55 dash.
OVAL NOTES: Saturday’s two “last chance’’ qualifiers were officially called the Charley Sweeney Meet (boys) and the Jane Headley Meet (girls) . . . A number of Connecticut teams competed at Saturday’s meet.
