Classical, Rams Share Lead in First Girls' Coaches Poll

18 Jan. - - Like two runners hitting the finish tape simultaneously, the girls’ teams of La Salle and Classical finished with identical point totals (112) in the first of three coaches polls conducted by the R.I. Track & Field Foundation. The Rams are defending state team champs, and received seven first-place votes among the participating coaches, with the Purple getting three.
 

Pointing up the high level of competition in the girls’ track league, Hope High School garnered 94 points and a pair of first-place ballots. Toll Gate received 71 points, with Barrington and North Kingstown gathering 65 and 63, respectively.
Defending state-titlists Hendricken picked up 118 points - and 11 of 12 first-place

votes - to lead the first boys’ survey. Classical followed with 97 points, and Chariho was next with 85 and one first-place ballot.
The next poll will be released on 31 Jan.

OVAL NOTES: On the latest New England indoor track leader board, Hope’s Royal Cheatham maintains the best time in the girls’ 55-meter dash (7.18) . . . La Salle’s Madison Meehan has the region’s top 1500 time (4:46.20) . . . In the girls’ high jump, it’s still Dakota Dailey-Harris, of La Salle (5-8/1.73 meters) . . . Hope’s 4x200 has the best time (1:44.49), while the Rams’ DMR performance is No. 1 (12:12.44).
In boys’ New England rankings, Hendricken’s Mark Vuono still owns the best 1500-meter time (4:09.60) . . . Westerly’s Jeremy Octeau has the area’s best shot put distance (56-2/17.12m) . . . Joe Velez, the Classical senior, has a 25-pound weight throw distance of 73-0.25 (22.25).
