29 Oct. - - Class Championships, the penultimate event in the RIIL cross country season, was doused in rain and pelted with wet snowflakes at the Ponaganset High School course Saturday. But the inclement weather - and the occasional mud patches - did little to deter the runners in posting impressive times.

Teamwise, Barrington captured the boys’ Class B and girls’ A championships. Hendricken’s scoring power provided it with the Class A boys’ title, while South Kingstown, and Smithfield teams took home prizes in the Girls’ Class B and C races, respectively. The boys’ C title went to East Greenwich.

A brief look at some individual performances:

Mc Adams looks strong in A win
In the girls’ Class A run, North Kingstown junior Aisha Mc Adams led out of the pack and cruised to the finish in 19 minutes, 19.7 seconds. The Skipper runner said she planned a strategy contingent on going against La Salle’s Molly Keating, the two-time state champ. (The Ram coaches opted out of entering Keating in Saturday’s race. “She’s OK, and ready to run next weekend [State Meet],’’ said La Salle’s Kelly Martin).

But Keating’s absence didn’t stop Mc Adams from turning in a good performance. She saw the win as something of a vindication of her disappointing end to the ‘10 season. She collapsed at both the State Championship, and at the New England meet, held in Thetford, Vt. In both instances, Mc Adams did not finish.
“That made me stronger and mentally tougher,’’ Mc Adams said. “I became a more mature runner after that.’’

In gaining the Class A team crown, the Eagles collected important points up front. Abby Livingston, Fiona Paine and Megan Verner-Crist went 2-3-4 behind Mc Adams, and received added points from Alice Burgess (11th) andf Julianna Portelli (14th).

Rebs’ Ethier posts top girls’ time
The senior from South Kingstown clocked 19 minutes, 14.1 seconds in winning the Class B 3.1-miler, nearly a full minute ahead of teammate Brittney Laraway. What’s more, Ethier’s race took place in the steadiest precipitation of the afternoon; a cold, drenching rain intermingled with snow flakes. Teammate Kendall Feaster added points finishing fourth. Westerly sophomore Jackie Burr ran a strong second in the B race (20:06). Erica Johnson, the Bay View junior, placed fourth (20:42).

Smithfield rules in Class C
The Sentinels, this season’s undefeated (11-0) Northern Division titlists, left no doubt Saturday as to who was boss in the Class C Championships. Smithfield’s 30 team points was good for the gold. The Sentinels put the finishing touches on their day by placing the first three runners over the line; all freshmen. Stephanie Mattson was the victor, hitting the tape in 19:58. She was followed in second by Becky Meinertz (20:07) and Madison Saliba (20:14).

Burrillville’s No. 1 - senior Anna Dumais - placed fifth in Class C. It was also a sibling affair in the Dumais family. Freshman Liz Dumais finished behind her older sister, and junior Danielle Dumais placed 15th.
For Marsella, another accolade

Chariho senior Mike Marsella (No. 17 U.S./No. 1 in New England) smoked the boys’ Class A field on Saturday. He clocked 15 minutes,m 37.6 seconds, the fastest time of the day on the boys’ side.

“It was a great race,’’ said Marsella, who was impressive two weeks ago at the Brown University Northeast Invitational when he raced against New Jersey’s Edward Chenerek, the country’s top prep harrier. “My reward [will be] the [Ponaganset] course record,’’ Marsella said. “a sub-5:17.’’

The Charger “long ranger’’ was 4:57 at the one-mile checkpoint, and commented that he went 4:40 against Cheserek on the Goddard Park course.

“It’s been a fun year,’’ Marsella said.

Marsella’s senior teammate - Dan Kilcoyne - placed second on Saturday; he was timed in 16:09. And finishing third was Dan’s brother: junior Jake Kilcoyne (16:12).
Mike Potter, Hendricken’s impressive freshman, finished fourth (16:14). Potter was followed into the chute by Cumberland junior Trevor Crawley (16:24), and the Hawks’ mark Vuono (16:27).

Mounties’ Butler is victorious
All season, Pat Butler has been a workhorse for the Mount St. Charles program. He took the boys’ Class C run in 16:42, seven seconds in front of St. Raphael senior Bob Parker. Smithfield’s Ryan Pagliaro was a couple of seconds behind Parker (16:51), while Prout’s Vic Ricci finished fourth (16:53).

Course Notes: Hendricken’s Ryan Tierney won the boys’ JV Championship (17:22), while La Salle junior Hayley Roberts took the girls’ JV run . . . Next Sunday’s State Championship begins at 1:15 p.m. with the girls’ race. The boys’ championship goes off at 2:15.
