12 May - - Joe Velez, Classical High nationally-ranked hammer specialist, is aiming the 12-pound implement toward a goal.
“I’m hoping to break the school record,’’ the Ohio State-bound Velez was referring to the distance of 230 feet (70.10 meters) held by Mark McGehearty.
Today at the annual Classical Classic boys’ meet at Conley Stadium Providence, Velez moved ever-closer to his goal. He unloaded the hammer a winning 221-4 (67.46). Just for goof measure, the rangy senior won the shot with a put of 53-10.50 (16.42) and discus (151-4/46.12). Velez’ efforts not only earned his the meet’s Field Event MVP award, but helped his team win the Small Schools division crown.
“I’ve been training. I trust it. It’s a progression,’’ said Velez, who employs four spins before his release. Velez also won an exhibition 6-kilogram hammer throw with a todd of 203-1 (61.90).
The Large Schools team prize went to Hendricken, which amassed 120 points. The Hawks got wins from Reuben Horace in the hammer, and senior Mark Vuono in the 800. The Large Schools 1500 meters went to Chariho junior Bryce Kelley, who was named the meet’s Track MVP. Kelley hit the tape in 3:57.9, a meet mark.
Barrington’s Charlie Ionata took the Large Schools discus with a throw of 152-1 (46.35), and won an exhibition 5-kilogram hammer event (219-7/66.92). Central Falls senior Steve Vazquez cleared a meet-best 6-8 (2.04) to win the Small Schools high jump.
Oval Notes: Two division championships, postponed due to last week’s rainouts, are rescheduled for this week. The boys’ Central Division meet will be run on Tuesday (15 May) at Toll Gate High. The girls’ Northern Division meet will go off on Tuesday as well, at Ponaganset High . . .Barrington High’s Julianna Portelli set a new Rhode Island for the girls’ 2000-meter steeplechase. Running at the Loucks Games in New York, Portelli clocked 7 minutes, 41.73 seconds, breaking the existing mark of 7:52.28 held by Westerly’s Rachel Orlando. Portelli finished second in her section of the steeplechase.
