22 May - - The La Salle freshman girls’ track squad scored 86 points to win the 2012 freshman State Championship yesterday. Smithfield placed second (58) and Westerly third with 45 points.
La Salle’s Mary Ernster brought home three gold medals. She went 15-3 (4.64 meters) to win the long jump; did 33-2 (10.10) to take the triple, and cleared 4-10 (1.47) to capture the high jump event. Hope High’s Quashira Mc Intosh won a pair of events. She clocked 12.5 to take the 100 dash, and 25.6 to win the 200. Jessica Bellows, of Coventry, also was double gold. Bellows clocked 4:54.1 to win the 1500, and 2:24.8 for 800 meters. Portsmouth’s Abby Cousens unloaded the 4-kilo hammer a winning 119-4 (36.37). Burrillville’s Betsy Dumais clocked 11:20.6 in winning the 3000.
