19 April - - Classical High took team honors yesterday at the Cumberland Distance Classic/Throwers Pentathlon for boys, held at Cumberland’s track. The Purple gathered 6129 points, to 5619 for second-place Central.
In the throwers’ pentathlon portion of the meet, Barrington’s Charlie Ionata won the 12-pound hammer with a toss of 202 feet, 7 inches (61.75 meters). Ionata also captured the discus (140-9/42.90). Joe Velez, the Classical senior, put the shot a winning 51-1.50 (15.58).
Among the running events, a 2000-meter steeplechase was contested, and won by Mt. St. Charles’ Mike Rollery in 7:56.2. (The state record in this event is 6:43.5 by Shea High’s Amilcar Tavaris at the former URI Interscholstic Invitational in 1993).
