25 Oct. - - The La Salle Academy girls’ and boys’ cross country squads captured team championships in Saturday’s Class A portion of the meet, held at the Ponaganset High School “Covered Bridge’’ 3.1-mile course in perfect weather conditions.

The La Salle girls, powered by Eliza Rego’s 18:13 winning performance, collected 21 points over second-place North Kingstown (85). Sophomore DJ Principe clocked 15:50 to win the boys’ Class A run, and help his Ram team to a 21-43 win over defending state champs Hendricken. The La Salle boys were running without “long ranger’’ Jack Salisbury, who is expected on the starting line for next week’s State Championship.

Principe ran his customary hard race. “We wanted to come out here and win’’ he said. “But our goal is the state meet. It’s a good course. You can hammer the first mile. I always prefer to run my own race.’’

The girls’ A race was pretty much the Rams, with La Salle runners taking six of the first 10 spots. But South Kingstown’s amazing freshman Ellie Lawler, this year’s state Freshman champ, clocked a strong 18:34 for fourth place. “I wanted to hold it back’ said Rego, who went through the first mile in an unofficial 5:42. “We all wanted to stay together.’’

Barrington freshman Grace Connelly acquitted herself well, placing fifth in the A race in 18:47. (Defending state champ Emma Mc Millan will toe the line next week, according to Eagle coach Annmarie Marino.)

Randi Burr, yet another impressive freshman, won the girls’ Class B run. The Westerly High harrier went 19:13 to far outpace the field. “I set out to run my race,’’ Burr said “This was a big confidence boost.’’

Margaret Mc Caffrey, a senior who has done nothing but excel in cross country and track the past four years, was the girls’ Class C titlist. She clocked 19:33 in a battle with Narragansett’s Marissa Mc Phillips (19:38). “She’s an amazing runner,’’ Mc Caffrey said of Mc Phillips. “We’re pretty much equal. I like this course; it’s forgiving.’’

Burrillville senior Betsy Dumais, enjoying a great season in her senior year, finished third in 20:17.

Classical High junio Joe Murphy went 16:36 to win the boys’ Class B championship, in a finish dominated by Barrington harriers. The Eagles placed the next five runners behind Murphy, led by senior Gerald Gurreieri’s 17:07 for second place. Avenger senior Noah Barreto won the boys;’ Class C title run with a time of 16:35.

Course Notes: Next week’s State Championships at Ponganset begin at 1:15 with the boys’ race. The girls are set to go off at 2 p.m. . . . The last of three RIT&FF coaches poll is due out this week.
