13 Oct. - - A total of 25 girls’ and boys’ cross country teams will represent Rhode Island at the annual Brown University Northeast Invitational this Saturday at Goddard Park in Warwick.
On the girls’ side, four girls’ squads are entered in the highlight Championship Division race. La Salle will be led by ’10 state harrier champ Molly Keating; North Kingstown by Aisha Mc Adams; South Kingstown by Paige Ethier and Westerly by Jackie Burr.
Other girls’ squads entered in the various other races are Classical, East Greenwich, Moses Brown, Narragansett, Chariho, North Smithfield and Prout.
The boys’ Championship race at the Brown meet will feature teams from Chariho (including Mike Marsella); Barrington, the Avengers, Rams and Skippers. Other local squads planning to compete in the Brown races are Classical, Cumberland, Moses Brown, Narragansett, North Smithfield, Prout, South Kingstown and St. Raphael The event begins at 9:20 a.m. with the Freshman division races. The remainder of the
race schedule: 10:10 - Girls’ JV I; 10:40 - Girls’ JV II; 11:10 - Boys’ JV I; 11:35 - Boys’ JV II; 12:20 - Girls’ Varsity I; 12:50 - Girls’ Varsity II; 1:20 - Boys’ Varsity I; 1:50 - Boys’ Varsity II; 2:20 - Girls Championship; 2:45 - Boys’ Championship.
Course Notes: Last year’s winner in the boys’ Championship Division is scheduled to return to Goddard on Saturday. Ed Cheserek, of St. Benedict’s Prep in New Jersey, clocked 15:00.8, missing the race record of 15:00.5, set in ‘04 by Cory Thome, of New Hampshire.
Cheserek moved to the United States from Kenya last summer. He is being sponsored to attend St. Benedict’s by a Kenyan orphanage.
