RIIL Wellness Conference: "Am I Hurting My Child?"

to be the keynote speaker on Nov. 16

9 Nov. - - The R.I. Interscholastic League (RIIL) and its Wellness Committee will hold a conference on Nov. 16 titled “The Pressure to Excel in Sports: Am I Hurting My Child?’’ The affair will take place in the Toll Gate High School Auditorium, 575 Centerville Road, Warwick, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
 

Dan Doyle, founder and executive director of the International Institute of Sport, will be the keynote speaker. Bobb Angel, veteran sports director at Newport radio stations WADK-AM and WJZS-FM, will be the moderator.
 

The topic of discussion will center on the pressure to excel in sports, and its exponential growth. “Well-intentioned coaches and parents often encourage student/athletes to specialize in their chosen sport at younger and younger ages,’’ said the Committee.
 

The panel discussion will encompass a wide range of issues relating to philosophy, psychology and science behind the proper development of young athletes, and brings together experts in these areas. Panel participants are:
* Andy Carr, boys’ tennis coach at South Kingstown High School.
* Andrea Grove-Mc Donough, assistant women’s track/field and cross country coach at the University of Connecticut.
* Ron Westmoreland, baseball coach at Portsmouth High, and father to former Portsmouth All-State baseball standout and Boston Red Sox prospect Ryan Westmoreland.
* Peter Kriz, MD, pediatrician.
* Neha Raukar, MD, primary care/sports medicine physician.
 

The conference is open to all youth and prep student/athletes; coaches, athletic trainers, athletic directors and parents.
