2 Oct. - - Hendricken’s cross country squad placed fourth at the Great American Race of Champions on Saturday at the Wake Med Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C. The Hawks gathered 168 points, and were led by freshman Mike Potter’s 16th-place finish overall. Potter ran the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes, 42 seconds.
 

Thetford Trail Run Event

Meanwhile in Thetford, Vt. over the weekend, teams from Ponaganset, Portsmouth, Mt. St. Charles and East Greenwich competed in the 3.1-mile “Woods Trail Run’’. The Avenger boys had the highest team finish of the local teams: 12th (358 points). The best Rhode Island finish on the day was turned in by Mt. St. Charles senior Pat Butler. He placed sixth in the boys’ race with a time of 17:57.
 

For the girls at Thetford, East Greenwich’s Meg Mc Caffrey was the first Rhode Islander over the line. Mc Caffrey clocked 22:45.
 

Maine Festival of Champions

The Cumberland boys’ cross country team traveled “Down East” over the weekend to compete at the Maine Festival of Champions, held in Belfast, located some 30 miles south of Bangor. Teamwise, Cumberland wound up third among 50 schools entered, scoring 176 points.
 

Junior Trevor Crawley was the first Clipper over the line, running the 5-kilometer course in 17 minutes, 4 seconds. Crawley finished 22nd at last year’s State Championships. Coming in behind Crawley in Belfast was teammate Matt Sutcliffe in a time of 17:22. Sutcliffe was No. 34 at the State Meet last year.
A total of 637 runners finished the Maine race.
