“Around the Course’’ Bolt’s Cousineau, Hope’s Akindolie Win Columbus Day Race

R.I. Track & Field Foundation

10 Oct. – – Running in cool breezy weather, and with machine-like precision, Cranston East senior Shayne Cousineau far out-paced the competition on Monday en route to winning her second straight Providence Columbus Day cross country championship. Cousinesu traversed the 3.1-mile course at Roger Williams Park in 19 minutes 8 seconds. The No. 2 runner – Prout’s Emily Pinch – crossed the line in 21:47.

In the boys’ Championship race, it was Hope High junior Elijah Akindolie clocking a winning time of 16:21, and making his debut in the event’s winner circle. Placing second was Classical sophomore Guillermo Martinez (16:39).

“I was trying to get out fast; get a fast lead,’’ said Cousineau. “I like the course. We run this course all the time. My [State Meet] goal is to finish in the top seven.’’

Akindolie, a veteran of both track seasons, was feeling the effects of  cold. “I felt the first mile was a little slow,’’ he said. “I went out in 5:37. I felt a little tired.’’
