11 June – – La Salle senior Jack Salisbury, this year’s R.I. champ in the 800 and 1500 meters, got in some quality speed work in capturing the New England 800-meter title at the 71st annual regional championship, held in New Britain, Conn. The Georgetown-bound “long ranger’’ came out of the unseeded section to clock 1 minute, 52.87 seconds, ahead of second-place Tyler Gleen, of Trumbull, Conn.

“It was the best race he’s ever run,’’ said Ram coach Vin McGinn. “He led wire-to-wire [in unseeded heat].’’ Fortuitously, the rain that plagued much of Saturday’s event stopped before the 800 went off.

“It was a P-R for me, by three seconds,’’ Salisbury said. “I felt good, and I knew I was capable of [the time].’’

Rhode Island’s other New England titlists came out of Classical High. Senior May Stern, this year’s 400-meter champ and state record-holder in that event, won the regional quarter Saturday in 56.66. The Purple’s Nathan Narcisse posted a winning 14.57 in the 110 highs. Narcisse clocked 14.32 to win the state’s hurdles title.

In other notable performances, the La Salle girls’ 4×800 finished third (9:15.18), and Central High’s Donatein Djero placed second in the 100 dash (10.97).

Oval Notes: Next Friday (17 June), Salisbury will be in Somerville, Mass. To run a “Dream Mile’’ in the Addids Boost-Boston Games . . . Teammate Matt Bouthillette travels to Seattle, Washington for the June 18 Brooks PR Invitational; he’s entered in the two-mile.
