14 May – – North Kingstown got by Smithfield, 84.7-75, to capture the team prize at the Cumberland Girls’ Invitational at the Clippers’ track on Saturday. In winning the 400 meters, Classical High senior May Stern clocked a R.I. state hand-held record 55.2 seconds. Since Track & Field News Magazine (which governs criteria for record performances) does not accept converted times as stand-alone records, Stern’s performance goes on the books as a hand time record. The fully-automatic state mark remains 55.44, turned in last year by Hope’s Quashira “Q” Mc Intosh.
