R.I. Track & Field Foundation

7 Jan. – – La Salle’s DJ Principe keep adding notches in his state-record belt. Saturday at the 48th annual Dartmouth Relays in New Hampshire, the Stanford University-bound Principe captured the 1000 meters in R.I. record time of 2 minutes, 27.86 seconds on the Leverone Field House track. Noah Belomo, of Alvirno, N.H. High, placed second in 2:33.20.

DJ’s time – also a meet record – eclipsed the previous state standard of 2:28.40 set last February at the New England Championships by the Rams’ Jack Salisbury. At last year’s Dartmouth meet, Principe came in second to Salisbury in the mile (4:16.06). Adding to his day’s activities, Principe also anchored two winning Ram relays.

LaSalle took team honors in a close finish with Hendricken. It was the Rams 63-55 over the Hawks after 20 events were scored.  Principe anchored the Rams’ winning 4×800, fronted by Joe Dos Reis, Max Dimuccio and Cam Hennessey.

La Salle also copped the gold medal in the girls’ 4×800 (9:44.13) behind juniors Grace Connolly, Emily Wilson, and Emily Kane, and senior Alyson Walsh. In girls’ team scoring, La Salle finished sixth with 29 points. The team from Rush-Henrietta, N.Y. claimed the team title (45).

The Rams’ 4×200 relay of Brandon Brown, Angel Morales, Tyler Lamonte and Sam Coleman clocked a winning 1:33.41 in a battle with second-place Hendricken (1:33.86). Coleman placed second in the dash; Lamonte second in the quarter.

On Friday night, La Salle’s distance medley relay copped the gold with a 10:24.45 performance, nearly 20 seconds ahead of a team from Marshfield, Mass. Principe anchored freshman Dimuccio, junior Lamonte and sophomore dos Reis.

The girls’ 20-pound (9-kilo) weight throw gold went to Ponaganset junior Gianna Rao on a meet-record distance of 58-10 (17.93). The Hawks’ Abe Salako won the boys’ 25-pound (11.36-kilo) event with a mark of 60-10.25 (18.54).

Nikki Merrill, a Portsmouth sophomore, clocked a winning 2:16.44 in the girls’ 800 meters. Merrill was three seconds in front of Collette O’Leary, of Milton, Mass, at the finish.
