20 Dec. – – La Salle’s “Big 3’’ distance men topped the field in the 3000 meters on Saturday at the RITCA Coaches Invitational meet at the PCTA facility. The Rams’ DJ Principe, Matt Bouthillette and Jack Salisbury went 1-2-3 in that race, with Principe clocking 8:34.91 for the gold medal.

Meanwhile, Barrington junior Mars Bishop fought off a spirited challenge from Hendricken’s Mike Kiernan to claim victory in the 1500 meters. Bishop went 4:09.76 to beat out Kiernan’s 4:10.89 for second spot.

“I’ve been sick,’’ said Bishop, who is coming off a bout of strep throat. “I know I couldn’t kick in for too long, so I went out purposely fast the first couple of laps. It was a really good race,’’ the Eagle runner said, adding that his goal is to break 4:15 for the imperial mile. “And to break 9 [minutes] in the 3000,’’ Bishop said.

In the boys’ 25-pound weight throw, Barrington junior Bobby Colantonio led the field far and away.  Last year’s state runner-up in the event threw 78-11 (24.05 meters).

La Salle’s success in the distances was replicated on the girls’ side with wins in the 1000 and 300 meters. In the 1000, Harvard University-bound Eliza Rego clocked 3:02.52, ahead of teammate Karina Tavares (3:04.71). Rego and Tavares went 1-2 again in the 3000, with Rego turning in a time of 10:16.74.

In the girls’ 1500, Westerly sophomore Randi Burr clocked 4:50.98 for the win. Cumberland High senior Meghan Scullin had a productive day on Saturday. She took the 300 dash in 44.12, went 16-11.75 (5.17) to win the long jump, and placed third in the high jump. Also on her game was North Kingstown sophomore Tereza Bolibruch. She clocked 8.81 to win the gold in the 55 hurdles.

The Skippers captured the girls’ 4×800 relay, with juniors Katarina Ho, Meghann Maguire and Wyndom Chase teaming up with sophomore Emma Smmartino for a 10:09.68 win. It was a similar situation in the boys’ 4×800, and freshman Sam Toolin made his major meet debut anchoring NK’s team. Joining Toolin were Nick Musumeci, Ethan Wyllie and Phiol Facey for a tme of 8:22.14. Toll Gate junior Courtney Jacobsen led the way in the girls’ 20-pound weight throw with a mark of 53-3.50 (16.24).  Barrington freshman Annika Kelly, making her RIIL debut, placed fifth in the weight with a toss of 43-3.50 (13.19).
