18 Jan. – – Weight throw seniors Adam Kelly, of Barrington and Classical’s Alva Hicks won their respective events over the weekend at both the Yale and East Coast Invitational Championships. At the Coxe Cage in New Haven on Friday night, Kelly threw 78 feet, 6 inches (23.92 meters), while Hicks took the 20-pound weight event in 53-10 (16.40). The following day at the annual East Coast Invitational at the  PCTA facility, Kelly posted a winning mark of 77-11.25 (23.75), while Hicks went 52-8.50 (16.06) in the girls’ throw.  Kelly is currently the nation’s top prep weight man; Hicks ranked second in the U.S. girls’ rankings.

2015-East-Coast-Invitational-Meet-9143In the Yale distance medley relay on Friday night, it was the La Salle quartet of Dan Paiva, Tam Rotsart, Jim Placco and Jack Salisbury posting a winning time of 10:22.25; it’s currently ranked No. 1 in the United States. Paiva returned to the oval on Saturday at PCTA to post a winning imperial mile time of 4:25.44 (= 4:05.8 @ 1500m), thus earning him a trip to next Saturday’s New Balance Grand Prix mile at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury. (Paiva’s teammate Salisbury had already qualified for the Grand Prix on the strength of his 4:21.32 mile win at the Jan. 10 Dartmouth Relays.)

“My goal was to go out and take the lead,’’ Paiva said, “and stay on my splits. It was difficult not to be at Yale [on Saturday], but when I had a chance to qualify [for Grand Prix] I took it.’’

At the Yale meet on Saturday, Hope High senior Quashira “Q” Mc Intosh finished second in the 55-meter dash in state-record fashion. “Q” posted a time of 7.09 seconds, thus eliminating her own SR of 7.11, which she co-held with her former Blue Wave teammate, Royal Cheatham.

“Oval” Notes: The girls’ divisional championships will be held next Saturday (24 Jan.) at PCTA . . . The next RIT&FF coaches poll will be released Thursday, 29 January.
