“Around the Course’’ Class Meet Advance; Rams’ Principe, SK’s Lawler, Bulldogs’ Burr are Set to Defend Their Respective Titles

     25 Oct. – – This Saturday’s Class Championships on Ponaganset’s “Covered Bridge’’ 3.1-mile course will presage the keen competition that will take place at the State Championships a week hence. The boys’ Class A race, for example, will pit defending titlist David “DJ’’ Principe against North Kingstown’s Sam Toolin. Cumberland’s top man, Ben Drezek, will also be in the lead pack.

     Defending Class and State champ Ellie Lawler, of South Kingstown, won the title last year running in Class A against La Salle’s top runners. This time around, the Rebels are in Class B, which puts Lawler head-to-head with defending B champ Randi Burr, of Westerly. Bay View’s Claire Hanlon, the ’15 Class B runner-up, will be competitive, as will Portsmouth’s talented Liz Sullivan. Barrington’s Kate Zitzmann, Lincoln’s Samantha Leal, Smithfield’s Una Treanor and Sydney Bagus, the Avengers’ Kalie Bremer and Toll Gate’s Sophia Maynard are among the returning coaches all-class runners. Defending girls’ team champs: La Salle, Bay View and East Greenwich.

     Westerly’s Matt Walker, the boys’ Class B runner-up, will once again be in Saturday’s field, as will Barrington’s Mars Bishop and Toll Gate’s Nick Reygadas. East Greenwich’s No. 1, Jackson Cronin, will be out to improve on his fourth-place showing last year. Defending boys’ team champs: La Salle, Barrington and East Greenwich.

     Course notes: Principe is currently ranked No. 4 U.S. in the DyeStat Top 20 poll . . . In addition to its usual Class and State Meet site, Ponaganset will for the third time host the Nov. 12 New England Championships.
